Bike ride raises huge amount

More than £4,000 was raised during an annual charity bike ride in Romney Marsh.

More than 200 members of the Folkestone Channel Rotary Club joined for a variety of cycling distances on Sunday, July 7, with some riding as far as 50 miles.

Organiser and former doctor Bill Whitby was delighted with the day’s event, saying it once again raised awareness of illnesses like Prostate Cancer.

“This wonderful event received remarkable support from the community,” he said.

“It reflects many elements of Rotary which include having fun, supporting our local community, fund raising and helping those in need.

“If the weather was better I have no doubt we would have raised even more, but when you consider in the first few years we were raising about £1,000 it is still fantastic.

Winners of the event were ‘The B Team,’ who completed the course in 2 hours 18 minutes, before they received their Team Wheel Trophy.

The Bike Ride has now nearly raised an incredible £60,000 for causes like The Poppy Appeal and other local Rotary charities from its base at St Mary in the Marsh.

Ashford strike late against Folkestone

13th February 2019

Ashford United made it eight games unbeaten as they came from behind to beat rivals Folkestone Invicta 2-1 in a friendly on Tuesday night.

A 90th minute winner from Theo Fairweather-Johnson ultimately proved the difference in a fiercely contested derby at Homelands Stadium. In a first-half that had few chances, it took Invicta 12 minutes to open the scoring; Johan Ter Horst tapping in from close range after his initial shot came back off the post.

The away side then had the opportunity to double their lead as they were awarded a penalty 15 minutes into the second half, but Alfie Paxman’s shot was saved by United’s keeper, Sam Mott, who dived superbly down to his right to parry the ball to safety.

They were then made to pay immediately, as United equalised just four minutes later; a terrific run and cross by Stefan Cox was headed in by Danny Parish – his fifteenth goal of the season in all competitions.

After then dominating possession for long periods of the second half, Ashford grabbed the winner after a huge mistake by Invicta goalkeeper Nick Shaw was enough for Fairweather-Johnson to chip beautifully over the stranded keeper.

United left it late to find a winner

Ashford United’s assistant manager, Alex O’Brien, believes the result was even more impressive given the way the team played in their 1-1 draw with Welling Town at the weekend.

He said: “It was fantastic considering how we played on Saturday. We weren’t happy with our performance then, so to deliver what we did tonight, I thought every single player put in a performance which was brilliant.”

He continued: “It’s all about momentum, to go off the back of this, the boys are really happy and really positive and now we go off to Herne Bay next.

“They’re a tricky side but we don’t fear it, we’ve just got to keep that momentum going and that starts again on Saturday.”

While Ashford travel to Herne Bay, Folkestone will hope to return to winning ways as they host Wingate & Finchley at Fullicks Stadium, in a Bostik League Premier Division clash.

Parking fines soaring in Folkestone

12th December 2018

Folkestone & Hythe District have raked in over £200,000 in parking fines between April and September this year, a Freedom of Information request has revealed.

More than 10,500 Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs) were issued in this period, with The Leas being the most common location to attract a ticket, with 891 fines having been dished out.

This financial year is likely to surpass 2017/18 where the council had an income of £500,000 through parking fines, a 53% increase from the year of 2007.

Transport manager for Folkestone & Hythe District Council, Fredrick Miller argued that they make minimal profit from PCNs.

He said: “The purpose of penalty charge notices is not to generate an income for the Council, but to ensure that drivers park responsibly, and to help manage the flow of traffic around the district’s roads and to improve road safety.

“The council employs a team of officers to enforce parking restrictions both on-street and in the council’s car parks around the district. The salary costs alone of this team of officers comes to over £372,000 per year, and when other costs, such as computer equipment, uniforms, travelling expenses and notice processing are taken into account, there is hardly any net income from on-street parking enforcement.

“Any surplus income in relation to on-street enforcement is ring-fenced for future transport improvements in accordance with national legislation.”

Sandgate Road Car Park had 287 PCNs in 2017-18

The price of a fine in the district is either £50 or £70 depending on the reason, and this amount is reduced by 50% if you pay within the first two weeks. These figures have remained the same for the past ten years and show that the price of a ticket hasn’t increased the income generated.

Dick Pascoe represents the Folkestone Central Ward, an area which includes The Leas.

He said: “Whatever we do some people will ignore the parking signs and not pay. It is only right that these people are fined as there is several methods of payment available.

“With the increase in traffic throughout the district some form of control is needed. We have tried to balance the cost of parking with the requirement, hence parking in the Sandgate Road car park is cheap and highly successful.”

The financial year 2016/17 was when the greatest number of fines were issued, with over 21,000 PCNs ensuring the council made well over £600,000.
